DESIGN STATEMENT :
For this project we chose to work on the classroom and more particularly on the double class for 45 pupils each. We redesigned this workspace by creating an optimized space, offering better learning conditions for the pupils; while taking into account the local traditions as well as an ecologic and economic dimension. Our concept is based on a strata system. Inside, we find some dais in order to optimize everybody’s space and to provide a better vision on the board for all the pupils. We have taken up this strata system, visually; outside so as to modernize earth constructions drawing on rammed earth. Thus, we can see several earth layers of different colors on each wall. We designed our construction by giving priority to local materials and a simple, effective and sustainable in time, construction system. We decided to use essentially local earth such as red earth, clay and black earth. We highlighted the utilization of local wood too: the Arfromosia, a rot-resistant wood, along with the palm-tree, used for its leaves, which are exclusively scraps. Our roof is made of zinc and galvanized steel, which are the only two imported materials of our construction. To finish, we wanted, in addition to materials, use the cultural aspect of the country by using the Ashanti pattern symbolizing knowledge and life-long education in order to create openings, light delivery at the level of the ceiling and be a natural ventilation. Thanks to utilization of local materials, our budget comes to 2000 $ USD.
