In Africa, a staggering 300 million people lack adequate sanitation. Since so many people do not have access to basic sanitation, this causes some of the biggest environmental and health problems facing the general population. This includes water pollution and the transmission of diseases and infections. Installing an operating sewage and wastewater treatment plant however, is expensive, making them unaffordable to most communities in Africa. Le Penseur uses a pour-flush method, this method uses two latrines pits to store the waste. The intent is that the twin pits are used alternately, so that when one is full, the waste is diverted to the other. This allow the contents of the first pit to decompose while the second pit is in use. During the decomposition of the waste the pathogens in the material will die off making the material safe to handle. The material can then be used as fertilizer. The overall program includes four separate bathroom hubs, each of which have two toilets and a well, that captures ran water for flushing the toilets. The hubs are separated into four groups to give it a semi-private, semi-public feeling.
