Dear NKA,
I am interested in the classroom typology, but I have seen that you said that our design should propose ONLY 1 UNIT (= 1 40sqm classroom)... so does that mean that we have to stick to the preliminary masterplan and that the scheme of the courtyard cannot change?
ANSWER: Yes, your design should propose ONLY 1 UNIT of the classrooms. That does not mean that the scheme of the courtyard cannot change. You can suggest a courtyard design, if it serves best to present your design concept, but it is not mandatory.
Also, we have noticed that in the masterplan are drawn 40 classrooms units (10 for each of the 4 courtyards), while in the legend of the same masterplan it says 21 units, and somewhere else is stated 27... so my questions are:
1. How many classrooms are going to be designed? And what is the REAL scheme that we have to respect? And how many units compose this scheme? (It is very difficult to design one unit without thinking of the aggregation of the units, and if the scheme is already set, we would like to know it if possible: for example, a 4 units patio is very different from a 10 units patio).
2. If the scheme is not fixed, can we propose a DIFFERENT scheme for one of the four courtyards, proposing a scheme where all the classrooms that compose it are the same? (As an example, we have attached an existing masterplan that propose a scheme with all the same units: a masterplan like that, for example, could not work if all the units have a different design)
In both cases, we need to know how many units will really for each scheme (whether is the courtyard system or a different one, since 21 (as the legend says) is very different from 40 (as drawn in the masterplan).
ANSWER: Thank you for your concerns and the issue you raised. The existing school site plan is not the final one, the School Masterplan will be realize at the construction site. In some previous posts on this Q&A page, I have responded to this issue as follow:
"ANSWER: And yes, focus your design only on one unit of a cluster, and not the whole courtyard/function.
Once the design submissions are in and the jury process is concluded to determine the prize winning designs, the Top 20 Design Entries and the Honorable Mentions, according to the highest scores. Nka will issue an invitation to the selected design teams to build their project based on site. Other design teams that would so much like to build their designs, irrespective of the results of the competition, will be invited to build their designs at Abetenim in Ghana, Singida in Tanzania or another rural site that Nka will source for the realization of the entries in the 2016 competition.
And keep in mind that from October 29, 2016 – January 31, 2017, we are organzing a site-based building workshop to piece together all the selected design entries to create the final Masterplan of the school based on site at Abetenim. The workshop will continued with the construction of the first classroom on the site.
ANSWER: This question has been answered several times in above threads. The task of a design team in the competition is to design just one classroom, so, don't be concerned about stated number of classrooms. The site plan you mentioned is only the preliminary design. There will be a workshop at the site in October to conduct site analysis and generate the Masterplan for the school. And they will look at all the designs that has been accepted for construction to create the School Masterplan."
Last question: the final deadline for the submission is May, 30... right?
ANSWER: Yes.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Have a good weekend,
Andrea
